Preventing Dry Hits: How to Keep Your Vape Tank in Top Condition

If you're a vaper, you've probably experienced the dreaded dry hit — that harsh, burnt taste that can ruin an otherwise enjoyable session. The good news? Dry hits are almost entirely preventable once you understand what causes them and build a few simple habits into your routine.

This guide breaks down why dry hits happen, how to stop them before they start, and how to keep your tank and coils in top shape long-term.

What Is a Dry Hit — and Why Does It Happen?

A dry hit occurs when your coil overheats because the wick isn't saturated with enough e-liquid. Instead of vaporizing liquid, the coil scorches the wick material itself, producing that unmistakable burnt taste. Beyond the unpleasant flavor, dry hits can irritate your throat and shorten the life of your coil, meaning more frequent (and costly) replacements.

The most common causes are:

  • An empty or low tank — not enough liquid for the wick to draw from

  • Improper coil priming — vaping on a coil before the wick is saturated

  • E-liquid that's too thick for the coil — a mismatched PG/VG ratio

  • A worn-out or burnt coil — old wicking material that can't absorb liquid efficiently

Once you know the culprits, preventing them is mostly a matter of routine.

The Two Biggest Culprits

1. Running the Tank Empty

This is the number one cause of dry hits. Once the e-liquid level drops too low, the wick can no longer pull enough liquid to keep the coil saturated — and every puff after that scorches it a little more.

Pro tip: Make checking your tank a habit before you head out, and refill as soon as the level starts getting low. Don't wait until it's empty.

2. Skipping the Priming Step

Priming a new coil saturates the wick before you ever fire the device. Skip this step, and you're essentially vaping on a dry wick from the first puff.

How to prime a coil correctly:

  1. Add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed wick openings on the coil.

  2. Fill the tank and let it sit for 5–10 minutes so the wick fully saturates.

  3. Take a few dry (unpowered) puffs to draw liquid into the coil before turning the device on.

A little patience here saves you a burnt coil later.

Simple Habits That Prevent Dry Hits

Check and refill your tank regularly. Build it into your routine — glance at your levels before you leave the house or head out for the day. Many box mods and higher-power kits use clear tanks specifically to make this easy.

Match your e-liquid to your device. Your e-liquid's PG/VG ratio has a big impact on how well it wicks:

E-liquid Type Consistency Best Suited For
High-PG (70/30) Thinner Lower-power devices and coils with smaller wicking holes
High-VG (30/70) Thicker Sub-ohm tanks and high-power vape mods

Using a thick, high-VG liquid in a low-power device with a tight wick is a common — and easily avoidable — cause of dry hits.

Tank and Coil Maintenance

Good maintenance habits go a long way toward keeping dry hits away for good.

Clean your tank regularly. Residue buildup affects performance over time. Clean your tank whenever you switch flavors, or at least once a week:

  1. Disassemble the tank and rinse all parts in warm water.

  2. Let every piece dry completely before reassembling.

  3. For stubborn residue, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

Replace coils before they fail. A worn coil is one of the most reliable ways to guarantee dry hits. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Reduced vapor production

  • A burnt taste even with a full tank

  • Gurgling or leaking

Keep spare coils on hand so you're never stuck vaping on a dying one.

The Bottom Line

Dry hits are frustrating, but they're almost always preventable. Stay on top of your tank levels, prime new coils properly, match your e-liquid to your device, and clean and replace your gear on schedule. These small habits protect your device and make every session smoother and more enjoyable.

Still getting dry hits after all this? It might be a sign your setup has outgrown your needs — a box mod or higher-power kit can handle a wider range of e-liquids and often delivers more consistent performance.
